A Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) uses a very thin needle to collect a small sample of cells for examination, while a biopsy removes a small sample of tissue. Both procedures are performed using imaging guidance to ensure accuracy. Your Specialist Radiologist will explain the recommended procedure and answer any questions before your appointment.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes. Fine Needle Aspirations and biopsies are performed by appointment and require a referral from your GP or specialist. Depending on your condition, recent imaging may also be required before your procedure. Our Booking Team will guide you through any preparation requirements when arranging your appointment.

Are there any costs?

Some FNA and biopsy procedures may incur an out-of-pocket expense. Our Booking Team will discuss any applicable fees with you when your appointment is arranged, so you’ll know exactly what to expect before your visit.

When will my results be ready?

Your tissue or cell sample will be sent for laboratory analysis, and the results are typically available within 24 to 48 hours. Once complete, the results will be provided to your referring doctor, who will discuss them with you and explain any recommended next steps.
